Gwen's Studio
Because its attached to my gallery, the studio needs to be kept relatively neat. Because its tiny, it is almost impossible to do so. Here, it has clearly gotten out of hand, with projects stacked up on the right-hand side, lumber for stretching behind the easel, and source material on the left. The window faces north, but is small, so light is amplified with a mixture of warm and cool florescents above...not ideal, but when I'm painting, I often don't notice that the sun has gone down, so they must be working for me.
On the easel is a painting with the rough layin.
And sometimes the mess spills over on to the floor of the gallery. After all, if you are planning a show, sometimes you have to lay all your source material out together, so you can see where you're going! Studio certainly doesn't have the room!
This way of working has an advantage: in the winter, the studio tends to be colder than the gallery since the heater is on the far wall away from it. In the summer, the air conditioning unit visible through the doorway is deafening, not to mention blasting in my face, so moving any activity into the gallery space is an improvement. All that said, it has been a wonderful studio for me, and our tiny cabin home certainly doesn't have the room for me to paint.
And, of course, we are likely to have snow in the winter....
